Description
- Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen
- Allegories of Peace and War
- a pair, both oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 17-18 July 1986, lot 196 (as Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen).
Condition
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The original canvases have been heavily lined . The paint layer is stable.
Both paintings have consolidated and restored damages and associated paint loss; these are visible in the backgrounds to both and , particularly to the figures of the Martial Putti . The restoration has not been sensitively applied and in some areas covers more than the loss warrants.
A layer of discoloured varnish resides in the interstices of the coarse canvas texture imparting a gridding of the images. Removal of this layer would improve the overall tonality. A u-v barrier varnish has been applied to the paint layer.
The majority of the paint is in good condition and the texture has been well preserved.
