His sale, London, Sotheby's, 18 March 2009, lot 336.
Condition
The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There are small areas of flaking in the sitter's left arm, to the right in the background, and upper centre, to the right of her head. There is a small loss caused by this flaking, centre right. Inspection under UV light reveals an extensive, but sensitive, campaign of retouching throughout the painting, notably in the boy's left foot and leg, in the lady's chest and arm, and through the background.
