Condition

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but a little raised. Damage and subsequent paint loss can be seen to the fret of the lyre, the background ,here, and the sitter's left hand. The paint loss has been restored out and is now discoloured. Under u-v lighting the remains of an older discoloured varnish can be seen. Removal of this varnish would improve overall tonality. The painting is in good original condition with well preserved paint.
