The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The original canvases have been lined and the paint layers are slightly raised but stable. The thinly applied paint layers, to both paintings, coupled with slight injudicious earlier cleaning has led to the prevalence of the dark brown ground colour dominating in some areas, particularly to the mid grounds and some of the darker passages. There is old discoloured restoration visible to the skies of both, where minor loss has occurred, and some of the delicate details, such as the rigging of the boats, has been compromised. The remains of an older varnish is causing an opacity in some areas, removal of this would improve overall tonality. Paint texture in the clouds and the figures in the foreground is in good condition.
