Description

  • Italian School, 17th Century
  • The Madonna and Child with a nun, possibly Saint Catherine of Siena
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is strip-lined, and there are also patches of supporting canvas adhered to the lower part of the painting to the reverse. The canvas is quite loosely stretched, the paint surface is stable and very dirty, and the varnish is uneven and very discoloured. Small areas of paint loss and associated retouchings are visible throughout, most notably in the upper left quadrant, above the saint's head, in the lower right corner, and towards the centre of the lower edge. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a very thick, milky varnish underneath which two campaigns of retouching are visible. The older campaign is visible scattered throughout, and the newer campaign is concentrated in the aforementioned lower right corner, upper right quadrant and towards the centre of the lower edge. In overall fair condition.
