Condition

This finely carved pair of fauteuils is in reasonable condition, with marks, scratches and minor losses consistent with age and use. The later silk and velvet upholstery with minor signs of wear and minor stains. One fauteuil with a secure breakage to the upper section of the left arm that is in need of attention. There is movement also to the right arm which displays an identical breakage. The other fauteuil with some movement to the right arm Ready to place.

E. Durmonthier, Bois de siège, Paris, 1960, p. 43, illustrates a very similar chair in the Mobilier National. A further pair of fauteuils à la reine with matching carved roundels is in the Musée de Camondo, Paris (inv. no. CAM 647.1). Compare also the suite made for Louis XVI's Salon des Jeux at St. Cloud, a firescreen from which was sold in these rooms, 25 November 1988, lot 130.
