The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable. The tacking edge has degraded.
Overall, the painting is in a very good state of preservation. The paint texture is very well preserved and can be seen in the spontaneity of the brushstrokes The colours remain strong and vibrant.
The textured paint to the hair has been slightly abraded , revealing pale ridges of ground colour beneath; these have been restored out. Removal of the varnish would improve the tonality.
