Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie’s South Kensington, 2 December 2008, lot 53a (as Circle of Enoch Seeman).

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is stable and the varnish is even but a bit dulled. No major damages are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick and milky varnish underneath which small and sensitively executed retouchings are visible throughout the composition, most notably in the sitter's face and hair, with larger areas of older retouchings in the background, upper left and throughout the right side of the background. In overall good condition.
