The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The original canvas is lined. The paint layer is stable but slightly raised in some areas. The remains of a discoloured and degraded varnish covers the whole surface. This is imparting a milky opacity flattening the image by preventing saturation of the paint. Beneath this layer thinness of the paint, caused by earlier injudicious cleaning, is visible and some of the more delicate scumbles and glazes have been compromised. Minor paint loss is scattered across the surface. The paint is in good condition and the textured brushstrokes in the highlighted areas is well preserved. Removal of the discoloured and opaque varnish would significantly improve the overall tonality.
