Description

  • lacquer, walnut
with caned drop in seats, decoration refreshed

Condition

In overall reasonable restored condition. The lacquer surface has been re-decorated but retains an attractive distressed look, notably to the knees and the backs. One chair has a repaired break to the front right foot, another chair has a repaired break to the front left foot - which has been re-attached. There is some minor movement along the lines of construction. One drop in seat with some damage to the caning which would benefit from professional attention. With some minor old marks and minor losses throughout commensurate with age and use.

Catalogue Note

Giles Grendey (1693-1780) had a workshop on St. John's Square, Clerkenwell and was renowned for his japanned seat furniture, notably the famous Infantado suite he supplied to the Palacio de Lazcano, Spain. A set of twelve red-japanned chairs of very similar form to the present set and attributed to Giles Grendey in full were sold Sotheby's, 7 May 1993, lot 104.
