Description

the rectangular needlework panel worked in wool and silk polychrome threads, with a central male figure in a turban leading a stag, two exotic birds, a lion and cherry sprig all worked in petit-point, against a 'bizarre' design of stylised exuberant foliate motifs and a dark brown ground; previously a seat back cover, now mounted against a stretcher, (approximately 88cm. high, 64cm. wide; 2ft,. 10in., 2ft. 1in.); together with a Flemish floral tapestry border fragment panel, later mounted as a cushion, 17th century, woven with a vase of flowers against a brown ground, section from a vertical tapestry border, now edged with four-sided green fringing (approximately 67cm by 62cm; 2ft. 2in., 2ft. 2in) - illustrated on-line.

Condition

A French gros and petit point needlework panel previously a seat back cover, now mounted against a stretcher approximately 88cm. high, 64cm. wide; 2ft,. 10in., 2ft. 1in. Panel attached with nails to a wooden stretcher. Panel with textile lining. Needlework generally in very good condition. Some oxidisation to browns, commensurate with the dye and age, and some small areas of loss with the foundation visible. Very decorative panel. together with:- Tapestry panel woven with vase of flowers against a brown ground, fragmentary section from a tapestry border, now edged with four-sided green fringing approximately 67cm by 62cm; 2ft. 2in., 2ft. 2in. There are some small splits and small repaired splits especially to the centre. The lowest section of the panel has elements from another section of tapestry and there are areas of the weaving. The outer edge with later banded border has splits along the colour change and they need some attention. Fading to colour overall. Lined with thick forest green wool backing.
