Provenance

Condition

The canvas has a very firm recent relining. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is only slightly discoloured. There are some superficial surface scuffs. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals careful retouching and strengthening throughout the darks of the painting, including in the woman's dress, in the background, in the monkey and in the shadows of the still life. There are also careful, fine lines of retouching through the flesh tones of the sitter's face, arm and exposed chest, to reduce the appearance of craquelure. The restoration appears to have been well-executed, and the painting does not necessarily require further intervention.
