together with another gouache by Jacob Spin, 'A clipper at sea', 1858; a painting of 'The Ludwig' by Bernard Teud, 1867; and with a painting of ships at sea by an unknown artist, 19th century (which is already nr. 7 in our selected group of works from the HAL collection)

Condition

(i) the artist's sheet is loose. There are some water stains in the lower edge and in the lower left corner as visible in the catalogue illustration. The paper also appears so be slightly sunned at its four edges. This work is overall in good condition and ready to hang. Presented glazed and framed. (ii) the artist's sheet has been laid on a fine sheet of paper which is loose. There are some water stains visible along the lower edge. There are some spots of foxing visible along the left edge and the sheet is somewhat sunned. This picture is in good overall condition and ready to hang. Presented glazed and framed. (iii) the canvas has been relined. There is a pattern of craquelure throughout, notably in the sky, and a stretcher mark is visible along the upper edge. Ultraviolet light shows scattered areas of retouching, including a circa 16 by 6cm in the sky in the centre of the left edge. Overall, the picture presents well. Presented glazed and framed. (iv) oil on glass. This picture has been painted on the reverse of the glass. There are some areas of oil shrinkage and some spots of oil flaking in the upper right corner and in the upper and lower edge. The picture is in overall good condition. Presented glazed and framed. All works on paper could possibly benefit from some light surface cleaning.
