Catalogue Note

The VOC and A markings on the present lot denote the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC). Having been granted a monopoly on the Dutch spice trade, the VOC was established as a chartered company in 1602 and was the world’s first publically traded company until it was nationalised in 1800 following the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and French invasion of the Netherlands.
