Description

  • Walnut
upholstered with later crimson foliate voided velvet, armrests finely carved with foliage, on turned legs joined by a stretcher

Condition

In good condition, with one repair to the left arm rest. Few marks and scratches, as expected, and traces of old woodworm which appears to be no longer active. The later 19th century velvet upholstery, is in good condition, with no evident staining. The same velvet used on the reverse of the back is faded. The lower edges of the seat have been applied with complimentary red wool passementerie fringing. Ready to place.

Catalogue Note

The form of this chair is typical of the mid-17th century. A related armchair, upholstered with floral-patterned tapestry, is in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. no. K.O.G. 1799).
