Description

  • silk embroidery, cotton
  • approximately 237 by 159cm; 7ft. 9in., 5ft. 3in.

Condition

Overall dimensions; 159cm across the top, 159cm across the bottom, 237cm the left hand side, 237cm the right hand side. This is a harmoniously drawn and a charming example of an Uzbek bridal weave. Comprised of five joined vertical strips. The polychrome embroidery in generally very good condition overall. There are some small areas of later work, for example the lime green used in leaves within two of the bouquet motifs within field, and to a section of the surrounding leaf on flowers centre of end of both borders, as visible in the photograph. The very dark royal blue used as the stems and highlights around leaves are later and possibly replacing oxidised browns, see for example top right diagonal bouquet, top right of border and highlights in other areas including the central motif. There are some minor surface stains to the plain ground of main field, visible as discolouration, and some tiny repairs including a small cobbled patch centre of field, some other small areas within the border also. Panel has been lined with white cotton and there is overturned ikat on all four sides. Overall very decorative and beautifully balanced drawing, with an especially lovely border.

Catalogue Note

Susani panels were part of bridal dowry and are a demonstration the bride's needlework skills; they were often used as hanging decoration or spreads for furniture or bedding. Nurata is a region Central Southeast of Uzbekistan, near the city of Samarkand. This example is very well spaced and has been made by a skilled hand, a work with similar field design and border elements sold Sotheby's New York, 3 March 2009, lot 6. Although the offered lot differs in the open flowerheads being surrounded by sickle leaves, a charming element to its design.
