Condition
- paper slightly faded
- sheet of paper laid down on a reinforcement paper
- two or three minor tears with small matter loss in the upper left and on the lower border
- small crease in the upper left corner
- small discoloration on the border and old traces of glue, barely visible
- thin scratch with minor tear on the burg's roof

Catalogue Note
Cet important dessin de 1854-56 témoigne de la passion de Victor Hugo pour le Moyen-Age et pour l’architecture médiévale. Juchées sur d’étroits promontoires et dominant la composition, deux tours, enveloppées de brume, semblent flotter. Ces évocations rêvées d’un passé révolu s’élèvent au-dessus du nom de Victor Hugo, qui occupe la partie inférieure du dessin. Du nom de l’artiste gouttent des perles rouges, que l’on dirait teintées de sang. Les dessins à l’encre les plus mystérieux et les plus poétiques datent de ces premières années d’exil, très fécondes tant sur le plan littéraire que sur le plan graphique. Ecrivain, Victor Hugo aimait insérer des mots dans ses œuvres graphiques, souvent son nom, parfois une localisation ou un titre (voir le lot 18).
