Condition

The sheet has been laid on board at the edges. Minor abrasions and paint losses at the edges, especially the lower one where there is a line of dirt probably due to a previous frame. Minor tear in the lower left which is not visible when framed. Light scratches are scattered across the composition. A few minor spots of dirt are visible in the background. Framed and glazed. Overall in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

En décembre 1916 Roerich quitte la Russie et part à Sortavala avec sa famille pour se soigner aux bords du lac Ladoga. Les affleurements rocheux, les falaises abruptes, les petites îles ainsi que les aurores boréales l'inspirent à créer une série de panoramas devenus célèbres. "Ces visions fugitives de lac, de ciel, de roche immémoriale et de nuages qui défilent majestueusement séduisent l'imagination et possèdent une fraîcheur et clarté de ton que l'on trouve rarement dans l'art contemporain..." remarque Christian Brinton dans l'introduction de son catalogue d'exposition de 1920, "... les paysages finlandais poussent encore beaucoup plus loin la notion de simplification présente dans les œuvres de jeunesse... On sent que la silhouette lointaine des montagnes basses est observée avec précision. On ressent la masse et l’énorme poids des roches tout en constatant une rigoureuse suppression du détail." En été 1918, Roerich retrouve sa santé et une exposition personnelle est organisée à Stockholm qui va lui permettre de financer ses voyages futurs.
