Description

  • Chaïm Soutine
  • Portrait de Madeleine Castaing, 1928
  • pencil on canvas
  • 33 x 23,3 cm; 13 x 9 1/8  in.

Provenance

Madeleine Castaing, Paris (gift from the artist)
Private collection, Paris (by descent from the above)
Collection Jacques Grange, Paris (acquired from the above)

Condition

It has not been possible to examine the work fully unframed. The canvas is not lined and is slightly undulating. There is no evidence of retouching under UV light. There is an uneven varnish which appears to have slightly yellowed. There are a few diagonal creases across the lower left corner and to the upper and lower edges, with an additional vertical crease with associated tiny flecks of paint loss (approx. 10 cm long) towards the upper part of the left edge. There are a few further scattered dots of paint loss notably to the model's right-hand eye and to the centre of the lower edge. There is a spot of paint, possibly original, to the upper left corner (as visible in the catalogue illustration). This work is in good condition.
