Condition

To the naked eye : The painting appears in quite satisfactory condition. It has been relined in the first half of the 20th century, a bit too strong which has slightly flattened the pictorial matter. The painting has certainly been cleaned, probably at the same period ; the cleaning was a little too strong and has removed the glazes, specially on the drapery and the angel on the left. The painting is under a slightly dirty varnish. Under the UV lamp : The painting appears under a green uniform varnish. We notice some old and quite wide retouches, mainly in the background, the faces, the angel’s body, and the drapery. We also notice a restoration on the top of the eagle’s head.

Catalogue Note

In a french frame of the beginning of the 18th century in sculpted and gilted wood with foliage and foliate scrolls.

The prototype of our portrait is certainly the Portrait de Madame Louis-Elisabeth de Bourbon-Orléans, duchesse de Berry en Hébé kept, at the Musée du Château de Versailles. Very appreciated at the time, several versions are known with some variants, for example the presence of a putto on the left.
