Catalogue Note

Joséphine de Bonaparte, Napoléon Bonaparte's wife, purchased the domain of Malmaison on April 21st, 1799. After their divorce, Joséphine spent most of her time at Malmaison. The watercolor is dated 1798 - Joséphine had not come into possession of the domain yet. The artist may have dated the work later, perhaps when he gave it to Edmond Taigny, which could explain the time difference.
