a shield-breasted eagle atop a canon, grasping arrows, and beside the US and the Pennsylvania flags.

 

Condition

Constructed in 3 pieces, toning, marginal damage (the worst along the right margin). There are fold lines that have resulted in minor paint losses. Antique gilt frame: 49 1/2 by 60 inches. Not removed from the frame for examination.

Catalogue Note

Prior to the Civil War, the town of Bethlehem in Northampton County maintained several companies of militia, including a regiment dubbed the Washington Grays, as well as a cavalry and artillery, variously referred to as the Bethlehem Artillery or the Bethlehem Artillerists, under the command of Dr. William Wilson.
