Catalogue Note

With its mahogany inset panels, very broad overhanging complex cornice and paneled case sides, this remarkable kast likely originates from Kings County (Brooklyn), New York as identified by Peter M. Kenny, Francis Gruber Safford and Gilbert T. Vincent in American Kasten: the Dutch-Style Cupboards of New york and New Kersey, 1650-1800, (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1991), pp. 50-3, nos. 8 and 9. This example is notable in that it retains its original thin lace drawer on its interior as well as its original finish. Its door panel moldings are also more complex and bold than on related examples. A kast by the same maker is in the Layton Collection, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (acc. no. L1994.3) (see John C. Eastberg and Eric Vogel, Layton Legacy: A Historic American Art Collection 1888-2013, (Milwaukee, WI: Layton Art Collection, Inc., 2013), pl. 42).
