Catalogue Note

Carved with the facing profiles of naval officers, flanked by the initials “H” and “P” over a star and two cornucopias, over a US naval ship.

The officers depicted, Captains Isaac Hull and Oliver Hazard Perry, won decisive naval battles during the War of 1812: Hull as commander of the USS Constitution against the HMS Guerriere August of 1812, and Perry against the British fleet on Lake Erie in September the following year. Perry’s victory, particularly in conjunction with the successful defense of Fort Meigs in northwest Ohio earlier that summer, secured the Northwest Territory for the Americans and would ultimately lead to final victory over the British.
