Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: "George Lascelles Maxwell, January Nineteenth, March Twentieth AD 1902."

George Lascelles Maxwell (January 19, 1902- June 1971) was the son of stockbroker George Thebaud Maxwell and Marie Raymond. They owned the brownstone at 14 East 77th Street, as well as a country estate in Oyster Bay, LI and a home in Pau, France. On August 22, 1932, George Lascelles married Katherine Thraves of Virginia. The couple continued to live in the 77th Street house, as well as their 13-acre estate “Oakleigh” in Virginia.
