Catalogue Note

Among the descendants was Dr. J. C. Beard, born 1844 in New Orleans, who graduated from the New Orleans School of Medicine in 1861 and shortly afterwards entered the confederate service as a surgeon. After the war, he served as city physician and subsequently coroner, was a member of the State Medical association, and built an immense practice from Texas to Mississippi. He was married in 1869 to Lou Daigre, with whom he had one son, George. In 1883, he was married again to Ida Mutter, with whom he had two children, Clifford and Ida.

It is possible that the tureen was a yachting trophy. Dr. J.C. and Ida Beard were members of the Southern Yacht Club. In August of 1888, the Mexican Gulf Hotel sponsored the Pass Christian Regatta, the largest regatta in the south, and would have awarded elaborate trophies to the winners.
