Condition

Very good condition overall with minor wear to the patina and surface dirt, particularly in the crevices, consistent with age and handling. The tail of the horse cast separately, slightly loose, with a joint and a screw visible. Some wear and oxidation to the medal colored bronze base probably associated. Very crisp cast with a nice chiselling particularly to the hair of the King, to his armor and to the edges of the saddle.

Catalogue Note

Actif dès 1668 auprès des sculpteurs en charge des décors du chateau de Versailles , Le Hongre fut notamment l'auteur de l'allégorie de L'Air (vers 1680-1684) et des bronzes monumentaux de la Seine et de la Marne (vers 1682) - ces deux dernières fondues par les frères Keller entre 1689 et 1690. En 1686, les représentants des Etats de Bourgogne passent commande à Le Hongre d'une statue équestre de Louis XIV destinée à la place Royale de Dijon. A la mort du sculpteur deux de ses élèves, Roger Schabol et François Aubry, furent chargés de terminer le projet. A la Révolution, la statue fut renversée, détruite puis fondue.
