Catalogue Note

This serigraphic print was derived from a poster Duchamp designed to announce the exhibition Sur Marcel Duchamp, held at the Librairie La Hune, Paris, May 5-30, 1959, to commemorate the publication Sur Marcel Duchamp by Robert Lebel. The Self Portrait in Profile is a torn paper collage executed in New York in 1958 (Schwarz, op. cit., no. 557) as indicated in the inscription Marcel Dechivarit (Marcel cut-it). The collage also featured in numerous editions including Eau & Gaz à tous les étages (lot 101). The serigraph was produced in an edition of 40 signed and numbered copies, but Duchamp also signed a number of other variations, the present example being among them.
