It is not possible to unframe the work. The collage element appears to be intact and stable. There mount shows some spots of foxing together with partial time-staining. This work is in very good condition.

Catalogue Note
Tout comme Man Ray, Duchamp était fasciné par les échecs et était un excellent joueur. C’était l’une des composantes essentielles de son art, un jeu fondé sur l’habileté et la stratégie, faisant la part belle à l’organisation spatiale et avec un ensemble de contradictions sources d’inspiration, permettant occasionnellement de faire preuve de génie. Duchamp créa plusieurs modèles de jeux d’échecs et s’associa lui-même au cavalier, peut-être parce que son déplacement irrégulier sur l’échiquier reflétait son mode de vie itinérant, tout en faisant éventuellement allusion à sa propre contribution polémique à l’art moderne. Il offrit cette œuvre à sa muse et compagne, la sculptrice brésilienne Maria Martins (1894-1973).
