Catalogue Note

The composition of the present work corresponds, with some differences, to a similar grouping of soldiers, found in the upper left section of Palma's substantial canvas, depicting The Battle of St. Quentin.1 Dating to 1580-81 and housed in the Palazzo Reale, Turin, this monumental work records the historic military victory of Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy over the French in 1557.

The dynamic and highly energetic execution of the present work is very characteristic of Palma's graphic oeuvre, in which his rapidly drawn figures are often then modeled with the sensitive application of brown wash.
