Condition

Good condition overall with minor wear to the patina and surfirt dirt in the crevices consistent with age and handling. Landsknecht : the candleholder may be a later association, fingertips partly missing of his proper left hand; Wildman : fixing hole to his proper left hand, some wear and oxydation to patina; a few minor dents to the base; minor casting flaws

Catalogue Note

Aux XVe et XVIe siècles, le nom de lansquenet désignait des mercenaires allemands au service des armées et des souverains européens réputés pour leur efficacité et leur brutalité. Un modèle très similaire provenant de la collection Linsky est conservé au Metropolitan Museum of Art à New York (inv. n° 1982.60.118,.119).
Figure mythologique caractéristique de l'Europe médiévale, l'"homme sauvage" apparenté au faune et au satyre de la littérature classique, fait le lien entre l'homme civilisé et les êtres elfiques présents dans la nature.
