  • The largest 42cm., high
each with central swelling section, rising from a tall spreading foot to a tall trumpet neck, one enamelled around the neck with a phoenix on rockwork, all above flower and fruit sprays, the smaller similarly decorated with equestrian figures above flowers and fruit 

Provenance

The larger gu: The Cowdray Sale, Christie's London, 13th September 2011, lot 259.
The smaller gu: Purchased in France in 1973.

Condition

The larger beaker is in general good condition with frits to the rim and base, short firing lines to the base, and firing flaws to the glaze in some areas. The smaller beaker has a restored two part semi-circular break to the rim (approx. 21 by 8.5 cm altogether), along with minor glaze flakes, and some kiln adhesions to the base.  Both have slight scratches to the surface, burst bubbles and iron spots.
