the straight sides rising from a lobed foot to a domed cover topped by a round finial, the exterior densely carved with a band of phoenix with their wings outstretched and divided by floral sprays, the cover similarly carved with birds and meandering foliage, the base with a single flower

Catalogue Note

According to the Royal Danish Kunstkammer inventory of 1674, boxes of this type were made in the 17th century. Compare two similar boxes illustrated in Ethnographic Objects in the Royal Danish Kunsthammer 1650-1800, Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen, 1980, pls EBc43 and EBc44; and a further two examples illustrated in Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, British Museum, London, 1984, pls 186 and 187.
