Provenance

Collection of T.Y. Chao (1912-1999), and thence by descent in the family.

Condition

The seal is in overall good condition with just expected minute nibbles and bruises to the edges and seal face. The catalogue illustration is a tinge redder than the actual colour of the stone.

Catalogue Note

Wang Zhuangwei (1909-1998), native of Yi County, Hebei, was a renowned calligrapher who was also skilled at seal carving. Known as one of the most important contemporary scholars in Taiwan, Wang took up various roles, including professor at the National Taiwan Normal University as well as consultant at the National Palace Museum, Taipei. See two seals by Wang in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Lasting Impressions: Seals from the Museum Collection, Taipei, 2007, p. 95, together with two calligraphic works by him.
