Description

  • lacquer and coral
the deep rounded sides of the bowl supported on three clawed feet issuing from the mouths of mythical beasts, the body carved through deep layers of cinnabar lacquer with archaistic kui dragons and lingzhi heads amongst other archaistic motifs, all against a diapered ground, the domed cover similarly carved and set with a coral bead finial, the interior lacquered black and with a fitted removable gilt-metal bowl

Condition

The tripod bowl and cover are generally in good condition. There are a few minor dents or chips to the interior rim, and re-lacquered to stablize the cracks, there is also some retouching to the rim of the box and the base of the feet. There is some tarnishing to the gilt bowl liner, as well as re-lacquering to the interior of the bowl. The present coral bead finial is likely to be a later replacement rather than original to the piece.
