Description

  • pottery
with curved sides rising to a lobed rim, the exterior modelled with tree knots, set with a gnarled branch issuing needle-like pine leaves on the side forming the handle, impressed with a square seal reading Yuansheng just below the rim, the interior lined with silver

Condition

the cup is in good condition. There is oxidisation, rubbing and a 0.8cm loss to the silver lining

Catalogue Note

An Yixing stoneware cup modelled in the form of a peach, similarly lined on the interior with silver, is illustrated in Yixing Purple Clay. The K.S. Lo Collection, Hong Kong, 1994, pl. 38; and another in the form of a pomegranate but lacking the lining, in the Chinese University Art Museum, was included in the exhibition Themes and Variations. The Zisha Pottery of Chen Mingyuan, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1997, cat. no. 14, together with two further cups of this type, cat. nos 15 and 16.
