First edition of this classic of Western Americana. "..the best account of the Santa Fé Expedition, it is one of the best campaign narratives ever written." (Jenkins). Under the auspices of Texas politician Mirabeau Lamar, the party set out to open to open a trade route which might divert trade from the lucrative Santa Fe Trail, but were taken captive by the forces of Governor Armijo and marched to Mexico City. George Wilkins Kendall accompanied the expedition as a guest.
