Catalogue Note

first edition, first issue. "Intelligent narrative of extensive travels from the Platte to the Arkansas, including the best account of Snively's abortive land-pirate expedition" (Howes). Mintz calls Sage "one of the earliest to travel the trail as an experience. Sage's prime motivation appears to have been to obtain 'adventures' for his book." Including the oft-lacking folding map "Oregon, California, New Mexico, N.W. Texas, & the proposed Territory of Nebraska", which was printed too late for inclusion in all copies of the first edition; about one hundred copies are thought to have been issued with the map, which is one of the earliest printed maps to name "Ne-Bras-Ka".
