Catalogue Note

Tancoigne accompanied General Gardane's embassy to Tehran in 1807 and negotiated various concessions for French merchants. However his insouciance and unfamiliarity with the customs of the country prevented him from countering the influence of the English ambassador, Sir John Malcolm, and the Peace of Tilsit rendered redundant the promises of military and diplomatic help he had made to the Persian king, Feth-Ali-Shah.
