Catalogue Note
"The [British] Arctic Expedition of 1875 left England on 29th May, crossed the Atlantic to Davis Straits in a succession of storms and entered the Arctic regions on 4th July. It sailed with orders to "attain the highest northern latitude, and, if possible, reach the Pole"" (Introduction).
The expedition of 1875-1876, was led by Sir George Strong Nares in the ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery. The mission was unsuccessful in reaching the North Pole, however Nares was the first explorer to sail through the channel between Ellesmere Island and Greenland (now called the Nares Strait), and a sledge party set a new record of highest latitude (83° 20' 26"N).
