Catalogue Note

In 1842, as a Captain in the United States Topographical Corps, the author led an expedition for the mapping of the region between Kansas City and Fremont Peak in western Wyoming. In the following two years he traversed Utah to Oregon, travelled the length of California, and returned via Nevada, Utah and Colorado. His accounts caught the imagination of the public and did much to stir up enthusiasm for the West.
