Catalogue Note

According to Ferguson, "it has not been possible to establish the various editions [of this work] because of the variations in the sequence and number of plates, and in the dates which occur in each." In this copy all the plates are dated 1857, but the order of them does not conform to either of the collations listed by Ferguson. The cover is lettered "Victoria Illustrated. First Series", suggesting the binding (but not necessarily the printing) of this copy dates from between 1862 (the appearance of a second series) and 1867 (the date of the inscription in this particular copy).
