Catalogue Note
Francis (Frank) Owen Salisbury connut la célébrité aussi bien en Angleterre que de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, aux Etats-Unis. Originairement formé dans le domaine des vitraux qui reste sa passion, ce sont ses tableaux, et plus précisément ses portraits, qui lui valurent une renommée internationale. Il peignit les portraits de pas moins de vingt-cinq membres de la famille Royale de Windsor, de six présidents Américains, dont le Portrait de Harry S. Truman (Harry Truman Museum & Library, Missouri), le Portrait de Franklin D. Roosevelt (Maison Blanche, Washington D.C.) et de nombreux géants industriels ou financiers, dont Andrew William Mellon, John Pierpont Morgan et John Davison Rockefeller Jr., sans compter les fameux portraits de Winston Churchill.
Salisbury était proche de la famille Post dont il réalisa plusieurs portraits, notamment celui de Marjorie Merriweather Post en 1934 puis à nouveau en 1946 (tous deux conservés au Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens, Washington D.C.). Les deux portraits présentés dans cette vente témoignent de l’amitié qui liait l’artiste à la famille.
Frank Salisbury exécute ce portrait d'Eleanor Post-Close en 1939, alors qu'elle était âgée de 30 ans.
