Condition

Good condition overall with surface dirt all over the surface, notably in the crevices, and minor wear to the carving consistent with age and handling. Minor chips are visible along the edges of the bust and the integral base and to the high points at several places. There are some superficial traces of what could possibly be a varnish applied at some point to the panelling surrounding the bust.

Catalogue Note

The model for this bust, dating circa 1643-1644, was formerly attributed to Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720). The future monarch wearing a cuirass was five or six years old at the time (Versailles Castle, inv. no. MV 2171). A terracotta of the same model is in the Magnin Museum, in Dijon, and a bronze cast in the National Museum of Warsaw, formerly attributed to Jean Varin or to the founder Charles Crozatier who once owned the bust of Versailles (No. Rz.D.72 MNW).
