Very good condition overall with minor surface dirt, notably in the crevices, and minor chips to the high points consistent with age and handling. There are minor chips along the edges of the marble columns and oxidation to the gilt-bronze mounts.

Catalogue Note

The delicate modelling of the terracotta, the hair magnified by complex hairstyles, the nakedness of one of the bacchantes - barely veiled by the second - give to these busts the mischievous sensuality that characterised Marin's style. As pupil of Clodion (1738-1814), he managed to compete with his master's ability for Anacreontic or Bacchic subjects in great favour among private collectors.
