Condition
In fairly good condition overall with minor surface dirt, notably in the crevices, and chips on the high points at several places consistent with age and handling. Traces of gilding are visible at several places, notably on the shell. There are a few lacks at several places, notably in the foliage. There appears to have a restored diagonal break to the upper part of the back of the fountain. Detached elements are available and could be easily reattached, including: the floral ornament on the top of the basket of fruits, the head of the snake beside the Love's proper left foot, the tip of the volute on the lower right end of the fountain. There is some chips and small lacks of paint on the wooden base, consistent with age and handling. The wooden painted basin imitating marble and its tine linen could be later additions. Highly decorative piece with a fine modelling good in all details.

Catalogue Note
For this model, the artist may have been inspired by François Boucher's putti, drawn between 1735 and 1740. He may have also been inspired by an etching by G. Huquier after Boucher, depicting a project for a fountain (Musée du Louvre, E. de Rothschild collection).
