Condition

Surface dirt is visible, notably in the crevices, and minor chips along the edges of the base, consistent with age and handling. There are some chips to the high points, notably on the leaves behind the Génie. His proper raised left arm has been reattached with a large trace of glue visible along his armpit. The fingers on his proper left hand have been retouched with a slip visible all over the restored area. Some lacks are visible along the lower edge of the base. The puppet has been reattached with a joint visible above and below Love's raised proper left hand. A larger chip is visible below one of Love's proper right toes. The tambourine is missing on the Génie's proper right hand with two fingers as well and the other fingers probably retouched.

Catalogue Note

The model of Le Génie de la danse comes from Carpeaux's emblematic group of La Danse, one of the four allegorical compositions of the facade on the Opera, in Paris, commissioned to Carpeaux before 1875. Although the architect, Charles Garnier, gave all four sculptors strict instructions, Carpeaux freed himself from the guidelines to propose a new representation of the theme, rejecting the usual conventions. He later adapted the various elements of the group into separate figures for commercial editions. The Génie de la danse is one of the most successful of the independent groups, embodying perfectly the dynamism of the theme.
