Catalogue Note
This composition is known in at least ten versions, variously attributed to Jan Brueghel the Elder or Younger, or Abraham Govaerts. The likely prime version is a signed painting in the Rijksmuseum which Klaus Ertz first published as Jan Brueghel the Younger (Ertz, 1984, p. 540, no. 137, reproduced), but subsequently revised his view, including it in his catalogue raisonné of Jan Brueghel the Elder (Ertz, 2008-10, p. 543, cat 246a) as a work dating from shortly after 1600. His change of mind was due to the appearance of a replica clearly dependent on the Amsterdam work, painted on a copper bearing a Peeter Stas stamp datable before 1606 (Ertz, 2008-10, p. 543, no. 246b, reproduced).
