Description
- Filippo Carcano
- The Duomo, Milan
- bears signature lower right; inscribed and dated 1874 on the stretcher
- oil on canvas
- 130 by 82cm., 51 by 32in.
Provenance
Sotheby's, Milan, 1 June 1999, lot 109
Exhibited
Possibly, Milan, Accademia di Brera, Esposizione di Brera, 1874
Condition
The canvas has not been lined and appears to be on its original stretcher. There are some light spots of frame rubbing along the extreme framing edges and one faint stretcher mark is visible corresponding to the horizontal stretcher member. Ultra-violet light reveals a thick layer of residual varnish and some scattered areas of retouching, possibly addressing old restoration, including: in the centre of the lower edge, in the pillar in the left edge and in the vaults in the upper right quadrant. Other scattered minor spots are also visible. Although the signature does not fluoresce under UV, this does not appear to be the artist's handwriting.
Overall, this picture presents well and is ready to hang.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame with a nameplate.
