Description

  • French School, 18th Century
  • A pair of decorative panels with pilgrims and lovers in pastoral settings
  • a pair, both oil on canvas
  • Each 163cm by 86cm

Condition

The canvas has been relined, and the paint surface has recently been cleaned. Ultra violet inspection reveals an uneven varnish in the border around the seated figures. There are minor scattered retouchings in the lighter tones and more thorough restoration to the figures and in the stone beneath them. Furthermore, in the standing figures there is extensive retouching in the borders, and to a lesser extent in the rest of the scene. There is extensive fine restoration throughout the floor beneath them figures and some strengthening to the costumes. There is a 10 cm restored vertical damage near the feet of the figures and a further smaller 4 cm damage towards the heads of the figures. Overall the condition of both paintings is good and stable. The works are offered in simple moulded painted frames.
